Joe and Sheila Kavalec created Mootown Creamery in May of 2001. The husband and wife team began dating at 15 years of age and worked at Joe’s family-owned custard stand (Kustard Korner) on Cleveland’s west side. They passed their love of ice cream on to their four beautiful children. And every Sunday after the family dinner, they would get into the car and search out an ice cream treat. After seeing the marble-slab process while vacationing one summer, the Kavalecs decided to create their own marble-slab ice cream store - thus, the birth of Mootown Creamery.
First, the name “Mootown Creamery” was fashioned by Sheila and Joe (named after the lovely animal that’s responsible for the main ingredient in the ice cream). Second, the couple found just the right location – close to home and just the right size (at the time!). And it snowballed from there. With hard work and support from family and friends, Mootown Creamery was ready for business in three short months.
Mootown Creamery’s Grand Opening at 15185 Bagley Road in beautiful Middleburg Heights, Ohio, was on Saturday, May 5th, 2001. Joe and Sheila Kavalec and their four children (Leah, Marysa, Ben and Joseph) hosted a benefit for the Hemophilia Treatment Center at University Hospital for the awareness of von Willebrand’s Disease. Family and friends came out to Mootown Creamery to enjoy a unique concept in ice cream indulgence on the house. It was a moo-velous turn out. Everyone had an enjoyable afternoon and became acquainted with the idea of “creating perfection one scoop at a time.”
Mootown Creamery is Cleveland’s original marble-slab ice cream store. It didn’t take long for Mootown to become a regular spot to eat and hang out for the locals as well
as the out-of-towners. Major sales growth each year
attests to the quality of Mootown’s products and
service. We use only the finest products beginning
with a superior ice cream mix and the richest
ingredients.
